October 30, 2022 Happy Sunday! I hope you are taking time to relax this weekend. This week I will go over Lab 3, which you will do this week. As I mentioned last week, I am giving you the option of Completing Assignment 2 (now due November 11) and your point distribution will remain the same as in the syllabus Not submitting Assignment 2 and I will distribute the points from Assignment 2 equally among the other assignments/lab reports.   Note: if you submit Assignment 2 it will be graded and that grade will stand.  Assignment 2 is posted on LON-CAPA. Lab 1 is graded.  The rubrics will be sent out either today or tomorrow and grades will be posted on LON-CAPA.  If you have questions, let me know.  Lab 2 (due Nov 4): I have posted photos and field data on the blog. There are separate posts for each of the sections.  Because of the difficulty with the nitrate testing, I have assigned groups to share data. However, you are to write your reports in your respe...

October 21, 2022/ October 25 update Happy Fall Break!  I hope you all have been taking the time to relax and rejuvenate. The only activity due the week of October 17 is the participation question.  There are no lectures or labs next week (week of October 24). While I wrote on October 21st that there was just a participation question  due on the 28th, the original schedule had Lab 2 due this Friday .However, I do not want you to scramble to try to finish Lab 2 this week.  So I going to give you the option of Completing Assignment 2 (now due November 11) and your point distribution will remain the same as in the syllabus Not submitting Assignment 2 and I will distribute the points from Assignment 2 equally among the other assignments/lab reports. I will post Assignment 2 later this week. Note: if you submit Assignment 2 it will be graded and that grade will stand.  I sent out Assignment 1 grades earlier this week. They are also posted on LON-CAPA.   Lab...

I sampled the Tacoma Hills pond this morning at 9:15 AM. Note: the pond has an outlet to the Red Cedar River and during high flows in the river the water flows into the pond from the river. While sampling, I met John B. Ohlrogge , Professor Emeritus of Plant Biology.  According to him the pond is spring-fed.  I will try to see if I can confirm this.  North side : Field pH 8.36; Temperature: 6.9 C Side side: Field pH 8.59; Temperature: 7.4 C   Tacoma Hills Pond Turbidity (NTU) North side 3.70 3.68 3.66 South side 3.51 3.53 3.59 Photos from sampling on Thursday 10/20/2022   North side of the pond.  Note that there was quite a bit of leaf debris along the edge of the pond GPS Coordinates: 42.711564, -84.425352 South side of the pond: Note there was less leaf debris and the water appeared clearer. ENE 480 Week 8

Happy Homecoming Weekend!  Go green! On Monday I will go over the procedures and logistics for Lab 2: Determining the Trophic State of Water.  Your monitoring plans are part of this assignment.  It is important that you attend lecture either in person or via Zoom. I do not want to have to implement weekly quizzes before lab, so please participate in lecture. Please note we are now meeting in EB 1220 for lectures.  We are almost done grading Assignment 1 and I will post  grades later this week.  I'm hoping we can get Lab 1 grades to you before Lab 2 is due.  See you in class tomorrow. Dr. Masten For those of you interested, I posted photos of the Detroit International Half Marathon on the ENE 483 blog .

ENE 480 Week 7

Greetings on this beautiful Sunday!  I apologize for not sending this message out sooner. First things: we have a new room for lecture: EB 1220!  Hopefully, the technology will work better. The Zoom link will not change. This week in lecture we will discuss  Lab 2, which will build on last week's lecture on project planning. In lab this week, you will you will meet with your teammate(s) in the Trans Lab and will work on the project planning part of Lab 2.  Shardula will be in lab to answer questions.   Several of the teams still have not completed the Google form documenting data from Lab 1. It is critical that everyone provides the requisite information. It is important that you provide the exact sampling location. For example, state that you sampled the hall bubbler near Room 15XX, or that you sampled the water bottle dispensing station near Room 22XX.  Failure to complete the Google form in full will result in the deduction of points on Lab ...

Greetings on this beautiful Sunday! This week in lecture we will discuss  Project Planning. While the notes are in the Lab 2 folder, the information is also pertinent to your Lab 1 write up.  In lab this week, you will complete Lab 1 by conducting the calcium titration in triplicate.  Again, your titrant volumes should be within 5% relative standard deviation. If not, please check with Shardula or Joseph for assistance. Once you have completed the titration, you are to go to the Trans Lab to add your data to the Google form .  Be sure to complete calculations for alkalinity and calcium.  The requisite equations are in the Lab 1 handout.  Many of the teams have not completed the Google form documenting data from Lab 1. It is critical that everyone provides the requisite information. It is important that you provide the exact sampling location. For example, state that you sampled the hall bubbler near Room 15XX, or that you sampled the water bottle di...
