October 21, 2022/ October 25 update

Happy Fall Break!  I hope you all have been taking the time to relax and rejuvenate.

The only activity due the week of October 17 is the participation question.  There are no lectures or labs next week (week of October 24). While I wrote on October 21st that there was just a participation question  due on the 28th, the original schedule had Lab 2 due this Friday .However, I do not want you to scramble to try to finish Lab 2 this week.  So I going to give you the option of

  1. Completing Assignment 2 (now due November 11) and your point distribution will remain the same as in the syllabus
  2. Not submitting Assignment 2 and I will distribute the points from Assignment 2 equally among the other assignments/lab reports.

I will post Assignment 2 later this week. Note: if you submit Assignment 2 it will be graded and that grade will stand. 

I sent out Assignment 1 grades earlier this week. They are also posted on LON-CAPA.  

Lab 2 (due Nov 4):

I know the lab this week was challenging, but hopefully, it was also educational. I have posted photos and field data on the blog. There are separate posts for each of the sections. 

Because of the difficulty with the nitrate testing, I have assigned groups to share data. However, you are to write your reports in your respective two-person teams. Be sure to note in the Appendix of the report, which data are yours and which are obtained from the other team(s). I will send out names and email addresses in an email but here are the groupings:

Section 1 Tuesday:

  • Teams 1 and 3 (not group 3 is from Section 2)
  • Teams 4 and 5
  • Teams 6 and 7
  • Teams 8 and 9

Section 2 Thursday:

  • Teams 1 and 2
  • Teams 3 and 4
  • Teams 5 and 6
  • Teams 7, 8, and 9

Lab 3:

Lab 3 is a sieve analysis lab and will be much shorter that Lab 1 and 2. I would suggest that you use the lab time to work on your lab reports in the Trans Lab.  In this way, you can also ask questions of the TAs. 

You are to work on the sieve analysis during the following times.  Please be on time and report to the ENE lab and Shardula or Joseph will take you to the geotech lab.

Section 1 Tuesday:

  • 1:50 pm Team 1 and 9
  • 2:40 pm Teams 3 and 4
  • 3:10 pm Teams 5 and 6
  • 3:40 pm Team 7 and 8

Section 2 Thursday:  

  • 12:40 pm Teams 1 and 2
  • 1:15 pm Teams 3 and 4
  • 1:45 pm Teams 5 and 6
  • 2:15 pm Teams 7, 8, and 9.

 Good evening, I hope you are had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break! On Monday, I will not lecture, but will be available in the classroom to answer any questions you may have about Lab 4 presentations and the final design project.  If you borrowed the CO2 monitor, charger, and USB cable over break, please make sure to bring them to lecture on Monday.  The data are to be downloaded before arriving in class. Failure to return the equipment in working order on the day specified will result in a zero for lab 4. You should be prepared to work on the final project during lab this week (and next).   Lab 4 presentations and reports and the participation question responses are due Friday, Dec. 2. The final project is due Monday, Dec. 12 at 11:59 PM.  The final participation question responses will be due at the same time. All the best, Dr. Masten

ENE 480 Week 13

Good evening, I hope you are all well and staying warm. We have a short week coming up. In lecture on Monday, I will discuss the final project and provide additional guidance beyond what we discussed last week. Section 2 students: please arrive to class ready to turn in the CO2 monitor, charger and USB cable before class.  The data are to be downloaded before arriving in class. Failure to return the equipment in working order on the day specified will result in a zero for lab 4. There is no lab this week for either Section 1 or Section 2 students. If you would like to work on the final project on Tuesday afternoon, please email Joseph to make arrangements.  There is no participation question this week. Enjoy Thanksgiving and rest! LSI Lab clarification

 Greetings,  Please note that Section 2 students are to  Collect samples at only one location (see the white board in the lab for assignments) Collect one hot water sample and one cold water sample for calcium determination. These samples will be collected in the bottles containing nitric acid. Label properly and place in the refrigerator in lab.  Collect one hot water sample and one cold water sample for all other determinations (pH, temperature, conductivity, and alkalinity) Note any color, turbidity, or smell associated with the water samples Determine all parameters in triplicate and calculate the mean and standard deviation.  All students: Make sure to upload your data onto the Google sheet .  If you don't know your team number, check the team assignment sheet on LON-CAPA.
